Barred Numeral cancel 1 of MELBOURNE at top right across 4d Brown Vermilion Imperf Emblem Stamp (Watermark Large Star - SG 42A). Local Melbourne usage. Attorney General's Chambers, 185….... At bottom left. Oval MELBOURNE VICTORIA AU 19 1857 cancel at back, Cover has been opened at backflap(torn at base of backflap at seal.).
Cover was sent to Germain Nicholson who was a successful Merchant store owner who, despite issues with overstocking during the 1845 recession, he successfully owned and ran a number of stores in Victoria taking advantage of the Gold Rush era. He also bought and sold numerous properties in Melbourne and achieved great success. He was also credited with being the first to Import a cargo of tea from Hankow to Australia.
He was a director of the Victorian Life and General Insurance Co. and in 1853 a founder of the Bank of Victoria, He was also a founder and director of the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Co. He was a prominent Philanthropist and despite numerous requests to enter politics, he preferred to serve his local community and was a magistrate for Melbourne and St Kilda from 1857. A few stains on cover but a scarce Item relating to a prominent individual in the early Victorian business and philanthropic community. Condition as per photos.
