Rare 1852 South Africa Cover cd Algoa Bay-Melbourne w Gold Rush Letter Cover has a Framed Double Ringed GENERAL POST OFFICE CAPE TOWN Crown cancel on front. Cover also has a handwritten black 3 and red 4 manuscript cancel on front, and a Prepaid cancel on front. Cover sent to Melbourne, VIC, Australia, with a receiving Ship Letter cancel on back dated to SE 2 52. Cover comes with a Letter inside, that was sent in regards to the Victorian Gold Rush, it being a relatively early example of this, as the Gold Rush had only started the year before in 1851. Melbourne was one of the most important towns for this Gold Rush. As per the route detailing on the letter and cover, this item was likely originally destined for Melbourne from Algoa Bay, South Africa, with the letter dated to April 30th, 1852, before quickly being redirected to Cape Town, Africa to then be sent via ship to Melbourne. This was likely done out of necessity, as there was likely no way for this item to be sent from Algoa Bay to Melbourne Directly without first being sent to Cape Town. Cover has been opened at back flap. Cover has some scuffing on edges and corners, some tearing on back flap, some age wear on both sides, and some general wear to both sides. Very interesting example of an early reference to the Victorian Gold Rush
